19.07.: Kolloquium des Instituts: Constantino Tsallis, Entropy - Measuring the uncertainty

Energy has to do with the possibilities of the physical system, while entropy has to do with the probabilities of those possibilities. The former emerges in mechanics and electromagnetism, which are directly empirical sciences. The latter emerges in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, which are more abstract sciences. In this lecture, I will elaborate on these issues, and illustrate their usefulness in both simple and complex natural, artificial and social systems. For example, the algorithmic use of appropriate entropies can sensibly help increasing the number of true positives and decreasing the number of false positives in medical diagnosis of cancer.
